Read Luke 10:25-37 here: https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Luke+10%3A25-37&version=ESV. Jesus tells the famous parable of the Good Samaritan to clarify that He expects His followers to do good to all people. However, His concluding exhortation, “Go, and do likewise,” reminds us just how far we are from the loving, self-sacrificing behaviors the Lord expects. So it was that Jesus became the Good Samaritan for us. He laid down His life, befriended us while we were yet His enemies. He promises us full restoration and life everlasting (adapted from "The Lutheran Study Bible," 1735).

Almighty God, You have shown us Your mercy in Your Son, Jesus Christ, who became our Good Samaritan to save us from all evil and death. Give us such a compassionate heart that we may not be blind to the needs of others but show to all Your mercy and love. Bind up our wounds, and send us forth to bind up the wounds of others with the healing balm of Your Gospel. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.
Fifth Sunday after Pentecost Opportunities for worship: Saturday, July 13: 5:00 p.m. Sunday, July 14: 8:00 & 10:30 a.m. God’s people have been rescued! The heavenly Father has “delivered us”—rescued us—from the darkness of sin, death, and the power of the devil. He has “transferred us” into the kingdom of grace in His Son, our Lord Jesus Christ (Colossians 1:13). Against the backdrop of God’s great rescue or deliverance, our Scripture Readings point to the redeeming, restoring work of God. We have been set free to serve God in the power and example of Jesus: He seeks, He loves, He saves.
Almighty God, You have built Your Church on the foundation of the apostles and prophets with Christ Jesus Himself as the cornerstone. Continue to send Your messengers to preserve Your people in true peace that, by the preaching of Your Word, Your Church may be kept free from all harm and danger; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever, Amen. (Collect for Proper 9).

Having previously sent out the Twelve in Luke 9:1-6, Jesus now expands the breadth of His Gospel outreach by sending out 72 more workers. Then and now, many people who hear of Jesus’ kingdom reject it. Much as we hate to admit it, we, too, have responded indifferently and, at times, have rejected God’s will for our lives. How heartening to know that Jesus continues to reach out with compassion through the Gospel ministry He has established ("The Lutheran Study Bible," 1734).

Fourth Sunday After Pentecost Opportunities for worship: Saturday, July 6: 5:00 p.m. Sunday, July 7: 8:00 & 10:30 a.m. In today's Gospel reading, Jesus sends out 72 of His followers with power to heal and cast out demons. When they come back, they are rejoicing that even the demons were subject to them in the name of Jesus. Jesus refocuses them on what is more important: that their names are written in heaven. You may have a lot on your mind. You may be distracted by worries or joys or anger. Today, God reminds us of our reason for rejoicing: we have been saved by the blood of Jesus, and our names are written in heaven.

While visiting New Orleans, Pastor and Sonya worshipped at Broadmoor Community Church, New Orleans. This Lutheran congregation is located in the heart of the city. The Emmanuel Youth Group will participate in a servant event there this summer.
